How to hang a painting

A well-hung painting transforms a whole room. Here are the simple guidelines gallery hangers use to show off your artwork, without getting it wrong.

The ideal height

The universal rule: the centre of the painting at 145 cm from the floor, average eye level. Above a sofa or a piece of furniture, leave 20 to 30 cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame, so the work talks to the furniture without floating.

Choosing the right wall

A colourful abstract painting loves light, but avoid direct sunlight, which dulls the pigments over time. Favour a wall that is seen as soon as you enter the room, in a neutral shade that lets the colour breathe.

The right fixings

Our canvases are oils on a light wooden frame. A simple hook rated for the weight (shown on each product page) is enough on a partition wall. On a concrete or brick wall, use a suitable plug. For a panoramic format or a large 100 x 100 cm square, two fixing points ensure a straight and stable hang.

Picture it before you drill
