How to care for your abstract painting

A hand-painted canvas crosses generations when given a few simple attentions. Régine Gardan’s works are oil on canvas, signed and one of a kind: here are the studio habits that keep them as alive as on day one.

Clean without risk

The golden rule: gentleness, and nothing wet. A dry microfibre cloth, passed delicately over the surface once a month, is enough to remove dust. Never use water, household products or solvents: they can alter the pigments and the texture. Avoid feather dusters too, whose fibres can catch on the relief of the paint.

Light: yes, but indirect

Colours love light, they do not love direct rays. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can dull pigments over the years. Choose a wall with beautiful indirect light: the canvas will reveal its relief at every hour of the day, without damage.

Stable temperature and humidity

A canvas lives better in a stable room. Avoid spots that alternate hot and cold or dry and damp: above a working radiator or fireplace, in a bathroom, facing a window often open in winter. A dry interior wall in a living space is the ideal place.

Hang it well, safely

Use a fixing suited to the weight of the artwork and the type of wall, and check it from time to time. For height, aim for the centre of the painting at eye level, around 1.60 m from the floor. If you hesitate about the right format for your wall, our format collections can guide you: large format, small format, vertical or horizontal.

Transport and storage

For a move or temporary storage, wrap the canvas in a clean blanket or bubble wrap without pressing the painted surface, then in a rigid box. Store it upright, in a dry place, and never lean objects against the canvas.
