The vertical format draws the eye upwards: it elevates the room, dresses narrow walls and gives ceilings room to breathe.

What Size Of Painting For Your Wall?
For the exact height of the hook: our hanging calculator.
Bare wall (no furniture)? An 80 to 100 cm format structures the space on its own.
A vertical painting plays with architecture. By guiding the eye from bottom to top, it creates an impression of height, even in a room with an ordinary ceiling. It is the format for the walls we never know how to dress: the narrow stretch between two windows, a hallway wall, the corner of an entrance.
In Régine Gardan’s work, the vertical is often the direction of movement: colour rises, streams or climbs like a flame. Hung at eye level, the canvas becomes a breath within the room.
Anywhere width is missing and height is waiting to be underlined. In an entrance, it welcomes and sets the tone of the home. In a hallway, a series of two or three verticals creates a walk. Next to a door or a mirror, it balances the composition of the wall.
Deep shades take on a particular strength in this format: an elegant black structures a contemporary interior, a green brings the calm of a forest, a pink softens a room that feels too mineral.
All the works above are one of a kind, hand-painted pieces. Looking for a format that stretches in width instead? Discover the horizontal abstract paintings.
Original Artwork Or Reproduction: What Really Changes
| Original artwork (oil on canvas) | Industrial reproduction | |
|---|---|---|
| Texture | Real relief of the pigments, light catches the surface differently through the day | Flat surface, identical look whatever the light |
| Uniqueness | One of a kind: a single one in the world, yours | Mass-produced, thousands of identical copies |
| Authenticity | Signed by the artist, certificate of authenticity included | No original signature, no certificate |
| Over time | Oil paint lasts for generations and can be passed on | Wears out and gets replaced like a decor item |
| What you own | The real work of an artist, with its story | A licensed printed image |
Place the centre of the work at eye level, around 150 to 160 cm from the floor. For a vertical format, it is this centre that counts: a large vertical canvas can therefore rise high without looking perched. Above a piece of furniture, leave 20 to 30 cm between the furniture and the bottom of the canvas instead.
Start with the main piece, centred at eye level, then arrange the others around it with regular gaps. A single row brings rigour, a grid balance, a freeform hang spontaneity; in every case, keep a common axis linking the works. Vertical formats work well in pairs, side by side, to dress a narrow wall or frame a door.
In an entrance hall, often narrow, a vertical format draws the eye upwards and gives the space a sense of lift. Choose a canvas in luminous colours: it is the first work you and your guests will see on arrival. Place it opposite the door or above a console table, its centre at eye level.
Each painting is hand-painted, signed by the artist and delivered with its certificate of authenticity.
